New lines open for Paris Olympics

Capacity added in time for the Games.

PARIS expanded its rail, metro and light rail network for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with events being held at locations across the city. The automated Metro Line 14 has been extended at both ends as part of the Grand Paris Express programme, which is building several completely new metro lines around Paris, mostly due to open in the 2030s. French President Macron opened the extended line on June 24, which now covers 28km (17.5 miles) from Orly Airport in the south to Saint-Denis-Pleyel in the north. Line 14 is expected to handle 700,000 passengers a day during the Games and will run all night on busy days, as are the Metro’s other two automatic Lines 1 and 4.
