Leeds City uncovered

Work to build a new‘gateway to the city’at Leeds station has uncovered underground structures hidden from view for decades.

HEADLINE NEWS SUPPORTING vaults and a lost Mill Goit have been uncovered during work to transform the main entrance to Leeds City station. The somewhat cramped approach, formerly shared by pedestrians and road traffic, is being opened out in a £46m scheme to create a pedestrian-only‘gateway’to the city. The previous cycle hub and rotunda steps outside the station have already been demolished, exposing some of the vaults under the station and a disused waterway hidden away for decades. The Mill Goit is a man-made channel that took water from the nearby River Aire to power a long-demolished mill. It is now being repurposed as a cycle hub with space for around 600 bicycles.
