Phased introduction of TfW ‘cycle trains’ is under way

A total of six Class 153/5 units will run as part of two-car trains on the Heart of Wales route, increasing the number of seats and bicycle spaces available.

TRANSPORT for Wales expects all six of its Class 153/5‘cycle trains’to be in service by the summer. No. 153552 (formerly No. 153352) was introduced on the Heart of Wales route between Swansea and Shrewsbury on February 25. Each Class 153/5 will be paired with a conventional classmate (Class 153/3). The formations will augment seating and bicycle-carrying capacity on the route and are aimed at making train travel more attractive to people who want to bring their bikes with them on trips to the area. Based loosely on ScotRail’s‘Highland Explorer’ Class 153s, which are attached to Class 156s on the West Highland Line, seats have been removed to create extra cycle spaces.
