The RCTS: then and now
IN the year when we celebrate 200 years since the birth of the modern railway, one date that stands out is May 14, 1951. On that day, the first passenger train ran on a privately-preserved line anywhere in the world, that honour (as documented in the Railway Observer at the time) fell to the Talyllyn Railway (TR) in NorthWales. The story of the TR goes back to 1865, when the company was incorporated by an Act of Parliament to construct a line of 2ft 3in gauge from Towyn (as then spelt), on the Cardigan Bay coast in Merionethshire, to Abergynolwyn and the slate quarry at Nant Gwernol, which was served by an inclined tramway.
