Marches hares

Regular locomotive-powered passenger workings are now rare in Britain, one welcome exception being the Transport for Wales Class 67 and Mk.4 sets on the Welsh Marches route, as John Heaton FCILT describes.

Guinness World Record: Longest-running railway series, established in 1901 THE sight and sound of a fidgety diesel Class 67 locomotive nudging close to the buffers of Manchester Piccadilly’s ultra-modern, yet soulless, concourse presents a clash of the decades. The locomotive reminds me of a Parisienne terminus, say the Gare de l’Est of the 1970s, with a Class 72000 3550hp locomotive having arrived with an express from the French platforms at Bâle. Our native Class 67 has a similar power rating at 3200hp, if not quite the design panache of its French cousin. Appearances of Transport for Wales’s Class 67/Mk.4/DVT formations have been hard to track down in the past few years.
