While you could simply write some code that runs on a standard computer and a standard Linux distribution, this is usually not optimal when trying to handle all of the data processing that a robot needs when dealing with events in realtime. When you reach this point, you may need to look at a dedicated operating system – the Robot Operating System (ROS).
