Prepare the right kit

You don’t want to fumble about in the dark, so make sure you have everything to hand

Nobody wants to carry more weight than they have to, but it’s especially important to only carry the stuff you need when you’re shooting at night, because it’s amazing how much harder it is to find what you want by torchlight. It’s also easier to lose things, so we recommend that you sort through your bag and take out anything that you don’t need. In most cases taking photographs at night involves making long exposures of several seconds or even minutes in length. That makes a good, solid tripod absolutely essential if you’re going to avoid camera shake from causing blur. A decent tripod head that locks tight and doesn’t droop is also a wise investment.
