Post-capture work is an essential component of successful black and white photography

There is more to creating a striking black and white image than doing a simple desaturation – it is very easy to tell the difference between a quick, thoughtless conversion and one that time has been spent on. There a number of ways to convert your images to black and white; the most basic way would be to do it in camera, however we’d recommend that you shoot in colour and RAW in order to maximise the amount of image information available to you, then spend time in post perfecting the tones. Avoid simply converting the image to Grayscale in Photoshop because the results will be very flat, and this is also a destructive edit that simply removes all colour.
