Create professional looking images by opting to work with a high or low-key effect

The most successful professional black and white photography can usually be described as either being high-key or low-key. A high-key image tends to be made up of mainly highlights and bright tones whereas a low-key image will have more blacks and darker tones. High-key and low-key images are usually made up of very contrasting and striking tones and tend not to contain many midtones. This means that generally the images produced are beautifully simple while maintaining a very sophisticated high-end look. Professional black and white photographers tend to steer away from too many murky midtones and stick to very contrasting blacks and whites.
