On paper, black and white photography sounds simple; the scenes you capture are absent from the complication of colours fighting for dominance and are instead simple presentations of grey tones. However, producing successful black and white photography is far more complex. It requires an understanding of tone, contrast and the ability to view the world in black and white in order to visualise the final image. Instead of just perfecting a composition you must understand the shapes, lines and textures in a scene and how they will interact with each other once the colour has been removed.
