The traditional landscape composition is based on a foreground, middle ground and background. By having elements of interest in each of these planes, such as a rock in the foreground, a tree in the middle ground and a mountain range in the background, the viewer’s eye is encouraged to travel through the landscape – which is considered successful in compositional terms.
These traditional landscapes are seen with a moderately wide angle lens, but there are other ways of composing the landscape. Ultra wide-angle lenses can also use the foreground-to-background arrangement, but by placing the camera close to the foreground, an exaggerated sense of scale can be produced (for example, the foreground rock looks huge in comparison to the mountain in the background).
