Highlights of the New York Film Festival.
THIS YEAR’S EDITION of the New York Film Festival offers a remarkably strong lineup. The programming reprises some of the festival’s classic themes, with particular attention paid to European cinema, American independent filmmaking, and films of an aesthetic complexity that reflect on the art of the cinema itself. The young Argentinean director Matías Piñeiro packs an amazing amount of action and thought into a mere sixty-five minutes with his new feature, “The Princess of France” (Oct. 5-6). Its subtly complex opening shot, a virtuosic four minutes, is of a nocturnal soccer game in a Buenos Aires courtyard that evokes theatre and romance arising in the shadows of a great city.
