Yesterday, IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa addressed thousands of party supporters who came out to celebrate the party’s 50th anniversary in Ulundi, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Hlabisa reminded people that if it wasn't for the party and its founder, Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who during the talks pushed for the federal system, the country would not have provinces and municipalities.
Hlabisa said the party had wanted a government that would be closer to the people, not a central government that wields power from afar.
“The idea of provinces and municipalities was championed by us because we always knew that in order to serve people well you must be closer to them,” said Hlabisa.
The anniversary event was attended by the DA provincial leadership which was represented by DA KZN leader Francois Rodgers and its provincial chairperson, Dean Macpherson.
