SAMANÁ, WHERE I GREW UP, is a small province in the Dominican Republic. I raised my five children in the country's capital, Santo Domingo. One day last December, I felt very far away as I walked down a chilly New York City street. I missed the country of my birth and the family I had there. My son Louis lived nearby in the Bronx, but back in the day in the DR, family meant crowds of people—my five kids, eight grandkids, two great-grandkids, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and me. New York City seemed almost empty by comparison. I talked to my family every day on WhatsApp, saw their faces and heard their voices. But it wasn’t the same as being together.
