A HOLIDAY DINNER sounded like a great idea, but the minute I walked into the romantic setting I felt out of place. Happy couples dotted the room, standing by the fire, sipping eggnog by frosted windows. The pairings reminded me of the wedding cake toppers I used to collect, those perfectly matched brides and grooms. Everyone had someone—everyone but me. You’ve been divorced for years, Roberta, I scolded myself. You should be used to it by now. I’d made the right decision in parting with my cake toppers, at least, donating them to the secondhand boutique I frequented. The chalkware original from the 1930s, the bride’s veil still intact.
