I GRIPPED MY CAR KEYS tighter and left the house. I’m not sneaking off to the animal shelter, I told myself. Not exactly. I simply wasn’t mentioning to my husband where I was going. I imagined Nick shaking his head, saying, “The last thing we need is another dog.” But he’d never stand in the way of something I really wanted. Especially not now. Our life had been full of surgeries, chemo pills and doctor’s appointments since I got my breast cancer diagnosis in May. The treatment had completely overshadowed our first holiday season back in Texas. I was almost relieved that Christmas was two days’ past. I got in the car and headed for the Humane Society, resolved to move ahead with my plan. Sometimes it was easier to ask forgiveness…
