ARUMOR SPREAD in our office that the grand Los Angeles house that appears in a Christmas movie starring Cameron Diaz was where I grew up. Not exactly—it was my grandmother Mimi’s house, where we went to open presents under the tree by the window on Christmas morning. The address itself said a lot: 1883 Orlando Road. The year 1883 was when my grandfather was born. I sometimes wonder if that’s what convinced him to buy the house in 1939, at the end of the Depression, when even a big place like that could be a bargain.
