FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER, and already my stomach was in knots. We had just moved my 83-year-old mother from her house in Virginia to an assisted living apartment three miles from us in Indiana. Mom had dementia. I was overjoyed to have her close by, but I was daunted by all the caregiving responsibilities—medical appointments, finances, even haircuts. And now here came the holidays. Christmas was Mom’s favorite time of year, and I didn’t want to let her down. She’d filled my childhood Christmases with her freshly baked cookies, a handmade Nativity scene, personalized felt stockings, a beautifully decorated tree—and those cards.
