THREE WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I took my four-year-old daughter, Lelia, to see Santa at the mall. Lelia and I lived with my mother, who was happy to look after her granddaughter while I was at my job. She even took her on little errands and outings. I was more fortunate than many single moms. We had everything we needed. Still, I was determined to get Lelia that one present she dreamed about. But what? She’d been keeping it a secret until she saw Santa. Lelia climbed up into Santa’s big, green velvet chair flanked by Christmas trees and super-size candy canes. “I know you’ve been good,” Santa said. “What would you like for Christmas?” Lelia didn’t hesitate. “A big, fluffy bunny!” she said.
