Everybody gets a stocking

I’VE NEVER KNOWN life without a cat. Or two, or seven. Growing up with the barn cats on my grandparents’ farm next door to us in Florissant, Missouri, I appreciated their unique personalities and believed they appreciated mine. We were friends, really, and I was lucky to marry a man who understood my nature. Living in Freeport, Texas, in the early 1980s, I saw a newspaper ad, “Free kittens to good homes.” Pixie was our very first kitty and shared our stockings that Christmas. She wasn’t an only cat for long. My husband rescued Pumpkin during a volleyball game at the neighborhood gym. Clarese found a home when she chose our front doormat to deliver her litter of kittens.
