THOUGH IT’S BEEN many years since she passed away, I’ll never forget Grandma Bonnie in her buttoned-up blouses and sensible shoes. She was a strict, no-nonsense disciplinarian, but she had a soft spot, especially for me. When I was five years old, she came to live with us for a time. I never knew why. Grandma was still able to live on her own—and she’d go on to do just that. But for that one extended visit, it was magical to have her there with us every day. Especially leading up to Christmas.
