His life-size Nativity held an unexpected gift

ANOTHER YEAR NEARLY over and what did I have to show for it? I’d thought I’d enjoy the freedom of retirement with my wife, Sharyn, but five years in, one day seemed to roll into the next with nothing new to get excited about. Time was, I couldn’t wait for the first weekend of December. I’d go all out, stringing lights across the trim of the house, setting up the life-size Nativity in the front yard. The Nativity was a tradition passed down to me by my grandfather. As a boy I’d helped him put together the three-sided wood barn and position the figures that lit up from inside: Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, a shepherd and sheep and the three wise men. We spread straw around to serve as bedding.…
