OUR FAMILY has a rather unusual Christmas Eve tradition, an at-home reenactment of the first Christmas using our crèche figures and candles.
The whole thing started as a way to include our two-year-old son, Caleb, in acting out the Nativity story. How could we explain Jesus becoming the light of the world to a toddler? His therapy for cerebral palsy involved blowing out candles to improve his ability to swallow. He loved that activity; what kid wouldn’t enjoy seeing his own breath extinguish a flame? Our family ritual developed naturally from that.
On that first Christmas Eve twenty years ago, we cleared the plates after our meal was done and resumed our places at the dining room table. I passed out candles and figurines from our Nativity set.
