WHEN YOUR children marry, you learn to share. And for families who lived states apart, that meant the “all or none” kind of sharing. Our oldest son, Patton, and his wife, Hayden, had spent their first married Christmas with her family in Virginia. Now they were coming to join us in Alabama.
“Finally,” I told my husband, Pat, “we’ll have a girl here on Christmas morning!”
Christmases with our three sons have always been wonderful. From toddlerhood on, our sons filled our home with activity. But I sometimes fantasized about little girls playing with dolls and tea sets.
Last Christmas, I had felt Patton’s absence at every turn—one fewer in the pew at church, an empty chair at breakfast. It made me sad, and the person who really understood was Hayden’s mother, Melissa.
