As the No. 1 pick in first-ever PWHL draft, Heise is ready to roll as the best women’s players in the world gear up for the league’s inaugural campaign

STEPPING TO THE microphone to make the first selection at the inaugural PWHL draft in Toronto Sept. 18, tennis legend Billie Jean King had a message for women everywhere. A member of the PWHL’s board, King has been fighting for women’s rights and representation for decades, and when she announced Team USA and University of Minnesota star Taylor Heise as the first pick, it was yet another moment in her trailblazing career. “A trailblazer is one that blazes a trail to lead and include others, the first person to do something or go somewhere, who shows that it is also possible for other people,” King said. “Trailblazing is bold, it’s brave, and it can be very scary and lonely, but it’s worth it.
