> WHEN THE Canucks drafted center Elias Pettersson fifth overall in 2017, they got a cornerstone pivot who’s become one of the NHL’s top stars. So, why not go back to the well? In 2022, GM Patrik Allvin took a defenseman named Elias Pettersson with the Canucks’ third-round pick, at 80th overall. Their names may be identical, but they don’t trigger double vision of Daniel and Henrik Sedin. Pettersson, the original, stands a lean 6-foot-2. Pettersson, the newcomer, checks in with a much stockier build on his 6-foot-2 frame. They also pronounce their first names differently. ‘D-Petey,’ as he has become known in Vancouver, prefers ‘Uh-LIGH-uhs,’ but adds, “You can say it however you want.” That amiability runs counter to the blueliner’s on-ice persona.
