> DURING HIS FIRST two years in North America with the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks, Russian-born right winger Matvei Gridin honed both his hockey skills and his command of the English language to laudable levels. In 2023-24, Gridin led the USHL with 83 points in 60 games. That was good enough to earn him first-round status in Las Vegas, as Calgary snagged him with the 28th overall pick. This season, he’s plying his trade with QMJHL Shawinigan. Selected first overall by the Val-d’Or Foreurs in the 2024 CHL import draft, Gridin was traded to the Cataractes in September. Earlier that month, he admitted he hadn’t picked up any French from Sacha Boisvert, a fellow 2024 first-rounder as well as a Trois-Rivieres, Que., native and collaborator on a dangerous Lumberjacks power play that clicked…
