WE’VE HAD SEVERAL PLEASANT surprises in the NHL this season, from the Washington Capitals ruling the Eastern Conference to the Columbus Blue Jackets pushing their way up to a wild-card spot in January. But let’s not forget what’s happening out West, where the Calgary Flames were also battling for a playoff spot, even surpassing the highly touted Vancouver Canucks in the standings at one point. A few factors have contributed to the Flames’ success. They’re a good possession team under coach Ryan Huska, who has found his footing during his second year calling the shots from behind the bench.
