With their third pick of the annual selection proceedings, the Giants selected quarterback Davis Webb, formerly of elite programs Texas Tech and Cal-Berkeley, with the 87th overall selection.
“He’s a young guy. He needs to come in and see how he does. (We’ll) throw him into the mix and let him compete,” head coach Ben McAdoo said. “I think he’s a big man, he’s a fluid mover, he’s a pocket passer, but he’s not necessarily a statue back there. He can move around and has some good rhythm in the body.”
Webb is the first quarterback the Giants have selected since 2013, when they took the departed Ryan Nassib in the fourth round. He ends his college career with a whopping 9,852 yards during his time in Lubbock and Berkeley.
“Obviously Eli Manning is a two-time Super Bowl MVP, so he is one of the best and a Hall-of-Fame quarterback,” Webb said. “I am just excited to be in the same quarterback room as him and we will see what happens. I am just trying to be a great teammate first, be prepared from a week-to-week standpoint as a quarterback because I have a long way to go.”
One of the highly-touted quarterback prospects of the draft, the Giants had a high grade on Webb. Though he wouldn’t elaborate on exactly which round, McAdoo believed he would’ve been drafted prior to the 87th pick, especially due to the idea that Webb enters with the proverbial ‘chip on his shoulder.’
“He lost a job early in his career, (and was) sitting there probably a little bit too long in this draft,” McAdoo said, explaining his “chip” comment. “He was the highest player on our board, we had a high grade on him, we felt that there was good value for the pick, and we’re confident that he’s going to come in and develop.”
Webb brings with him one of the draft’s most interesting stories. A four-star prospect from Prospect, Texas, Webb stayed local at Texas Tech. Taking over for an injured Baker Mayfield, he made an instant impact in the quarterback paradise in Lubbock. In his first career start, a 42-35 win over Iowa State, Webb threw for 415 yards and a trio of scores. He topped the mark the next week, throwing for 462 yards in a win over West Virginia. His freshman year ended with an MVP performance in the Holida...
