OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, BRAVE ACTIVISTS such as myself have attempted to reorganise society through the lens of group identity, censor problematic language and control the speech of citizens, rewrite history and the arts and school curricula in service of our message, override the concept of the sex binary, and destroy the livelihoods and reputations of anyone who failed to comply. Then some bigots came along and started a culture war by complaining about it. Thankfully Lisa Nandy, the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has announced that under this new Labour government “the era of culture wars is over”.
