The signature of the famous physicist, best known for developing the theory of relativity, sold for £15, 860 with fees to an international buyer in the Anderson & Garland sale in Newcastle.
Einstein's signed copy of his Das Relativitats-Prinzip, or the Principle of Relativity., had a pre-sale estimate of £2,000-£4,000.
It was part of collection of the late ace autograph hunter Franz-Peter Bach made it his business to capture signatures of the famous over the years and which was sold for a total of almost £40,000.
The one signature which was not from the collection a $65 cheque signed in 1961 by Marilyn Monroe who starred in the 1959 film Some Like It Hot, made the next highest price at £3,250.

Fred Wyrley-Birch, director and auctioneer at Anderson & Garland, said: "We are thrilled with the result, proving once again that Einstein's brilliance isn't just relative, but absolute when it comes to collector interest.
"This is an extraordinary piece of history, and given its unique nature, it's likely one of a kind. A true gem of a historical artefact." Next best was a piece of paper signed by the American hip hop star Tupac Shakur, who was shot dead in 1996. It sold for £1,170 against an estimate of £150-£250.
Other prices paid included £1,430 for an autograph of baseball legend George Herman 'Babe' Ruth; a first edition of Vineland signed by author Thomas Pynchon £1,300; an Abraham Lincoln signature on an engraving on a scene in Illinois £1,274.
