The application proved unpopular, generating 130 public objections online, letters of objection from the council’s Conservative group leader Liam Bones, and Alan Campbell MP.
The council’s director of public health, Wendy Burke, also submitted her consideration to the committee, highlighting that gambling participation is 10% higher in North Tyneside than the national average (59% vs 49%).
The council's summary of the director's position stated: "Concerns are also raised regarding the potential gambling related harm to the individual gambler, their families and wider society.
"These can be financial harms, relationship harms, mental and physical health harms and employment and education harms."
Other public concerns noted included a fear of anti-social behaviour around the site, given its proposed 24-hour opening hours.
