Last week, a Tory motion calling for a full-time council officer to work alongside the Friends of Tynemouth Pool to secure external cash to bring the coastal landmark back to life was rejected by the authority's Labour majority. Deputy mayor Coun Carl Johnson told full council that while the chamber wished the 'Friends' well, the council was not in a position to pass the motion.
In addition, as part of the council's cost cutting embedded into its budget in January, 200 staff members are expected to leave the authority over the next two years.
Coun Johnson said: “We have given them [the Friends] the opportunity with the land there, the council gave them planning permission. We have engaged a number of consultants and set up a number of meetings with them over the years with consultants to try and bring this forward.
“We certainly have given support to the Friends of Tynemouth Outdoor Pool over the years and continue to do so. What I can't do is support this motion, it is once again the Conservative Party bringing forward motions that should have been in their budget just last mon...
