DEPRESSION LINKED TO ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Researchers from Edith Cowan University, WA, have found a strong link between symptoms of depression and cognitive decline. They examined 460 adults in Western Australia and found that people over the age of 65 who exhibited particular signs of depression were more likely to suffer from memory problems. “We found that the signs of depression begin well before the symptoms of dementia begin manifesting,” says Dr Hamid Sohrabi of ECU’s Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Research and Care. About half of all incidences of the disease are associated with genetic risk factors.
