Carla Zampatti is a fashion icon and one of Australia’s most successful businesswomen, and despite two divorces, she says that she has no regrets, writes Michael Sheather.

CARLA ZAMPATTI, THE septuagenarian designer and doyenne of Australian fashion, opens the door to her eastern suburbs home with a dramatic flourish that would not be out of place on the catwalks of Milan. Her eyes are hidden behind a pair of smoke-lensed sunglasses the size of saucers and she is dressed in striking, body-hugging black, topped by an exquisite ebony turkey-feather coat. She extends her hand and drawls languidly with just the hint of a husky Italian accent, “Hello. It is a pleasure to meet you. I’m Carla. Won’t you come in?” If anyone knows how to create a glamorous first impression then it is Carla Zampatti, 72 – fashionista, feminist and Australia’s first lady of fabulous.
