A FEW YEARS AGO, I received an honorary degree from the University of East London. The other honorary graduate that day was the (male) founder of a large greetings card company, a man in his 70s who had worked his way up from nowhere to great wealth and success. In his address, he told the thousands of students graduating that day: “There are twenty-four hours in the day. Use them.” His view was that men need six hours’ sleep a night, women seven and children eight. Any more than that and we are wasting time.
