Garden of delight

Officially we’re in the NSW Central Tablelands but in our heads we’re straying into Europe via Mayfield, Australia’s largest privately owned, cool-climate garden, near Oberon. Once a humble sheep farm, it has been turned into a botanical work of art inspired by the best gardens in Europe, and boasts “numerous follies”. And who doesn’t love a floricultural folly? The garden is divided into two: 16 hectares that are open to the public daily except for Christmas and Boxing Day, and another 49 hectares (the Hawkins family’s private estate), which are open during Mayfield’s four seasonal festivals.
