The show must go on

A Chorus Line choreographer Amy Campbell returns to the theatre with a renewed sense of how important it is to spread joy.

Amy Campbell has loved Michael Bennett’s A Chorus Line since she was six, so it was a dream to be granted permission to direct the first Australian production of the show with her own original choreography. She had two-and-a-half weeks to prepare the cast and rehearsals were “scheduled within an inch of our lives” ahead of the March 2020 premiere. “It was blood, sweat and physio appointments,” she jokes. The first preview received an uproarious standing ovation. “I was so proud,” Amy says, “but we could feel the world starting to shift.” The joy she felt at the reception for the show was undercut by a growing sense of apprehension.
