LAZY GARDENING When “doing nothing” is your friend The trouble with gardening shows is they show people doing things – such as digging gardening beds. Digging is therapeutic for those who like that kind of thing, but those beds can more easily grow weeds than flowers or vegetables. For those without time or green fingers: DON’T dig veg or flower beds. Plant flowing shrubs (the “don’t prune me until I try to invade the living room” kind such as dwarf bougainvillea, ground-cover salvias or rambling roses), or edible red-leafed hibiscus bushes instead of lettuce, thick rows of garlic chives instead of delicate ordinary chives, giant perennial chilli bushes, almost indestructible warrigal spinach and big hanging baskets of weed-free cherry tomatoes.
