While polls show 70 per cent of us support same-sex marriage, opposition remains stubborn. Karen Middleton reports on why opponents are so against it.

SINCE CONSERVATIVE Catholic Ireland voted for gay marriage and the United States Supreme Court amended that country’s law, advocates in Australia are convinced change is coming here, too. Their euphoria creates a sense of momentum – that if the White House can be lit up like a rainbow, Parliament in Canberra surely won’t be far behind. Yet where once it was those demanding same-sex marriage that were most afraid of speaking out (although many still fear abuse or worse if they hold hands in public), now those against the change are protesting that it is hard to make their voices heard above the cheers.
