ROMANTIC RUINED castles, verdant vineyards, photogenic villages and medieval cities: the Rhine packs them all into its long and winding journey from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea. On a recent eight-day cruise on the lavishly appointed S.S. (Super Ship) Antoinette, we headed upriver from Amsterdam to Basel and enjoyed a wonderful taste of this culture-rich region. Cologne, which was the first place we stopped after embarking in Amsterdam, was a capital city in Roman times and you can see impressive ruins of the governor’s palace (Praetorium) in the Jewish Museum. Yet it’s the Gothic cathedral that attracts most visitors to the city.
