Rachel Caine is living on remote Idaho reservation, studying and tracking native wolves, when an English peer approaches her out of the blue with an intriguing job offer. He wants to breed up his own pack of wolves, a species extinct for centuries in Britain, and release them onto his estates in her native Cumbria, near the Scottish border. Though mistrustful of his motives, and nervous about reconnecting with the family she left behind (an estranged brother, difficult mother now in a nursing home) Rachel returns home, pregnant, to start “re-wilding”.
