Victorians are still counting the cost of the ferocious storm that tore through the state’s east in June. Over 9000 requests for help made it the busiest week on record for the Victoria State Emergency Service, and as we go to press around 1500 properties are expected to remain without power for more than a month. But despite the devastation, the Dandenong Ranges community is rallying. In just a few days, Jody Yandle and other locals established Help the Hills, a group that matches volunteers with those in need. “People are really keen to help, that’s the great part of a small community,”says Jody.“At one property, the residents were in their mid-eighties, 19 enormous trees had fallen and they planned to move to a retirement home because they couldn’t deal…
