Selecting the best specimen for study with your camera is an essential skill

A common mistake new photographers can make in any genre is to let the enthusiasm and eagerness to capture a photo get in the way of a well-considered composition. To arrive on location, set up your tripod and immediately start shooting is often not an effective strategy for identifying the best possible viewpoint or subject for your images. By instantly selecting one example and focusing your attention on photographing it, you will likely miss a plethora of other opportunities for great shots – make sure you look around. By choosing the ‘wrong’ subject, you may find it suffers from insufficient colour separation from the background, resulting in an image that lacks dimension and contrast, where your intended focal point is indiscernible.
