Look beyond the basics and learn to shoot close-up with added drama

Although it is highly specialised, there is a wide-reaching appeal of the ability of creating close-up images to reveal previously unseen details, in a unlimited number of potential subjects. Even the most mundane of everyday objects can be shown in a new way, when it is explored with a macro lens; hidden colours and textures are magnified to frame-filling dimensions and placed in a novel context. The most popular subjects tend to be those from the natural world; insects and plant life make an appearance in the majority of photographer’s macro portfolios. This is most likely due to the sense of wonder created by freezing these often fast-moving subjects in a moment and allowing the viewer a glimpse of the world from their perspective.
