Raid the shed for machined detail

The patterns and textures lurking within machined parts take on a new life under magnification. Add a splash of colour from a well-placed paper background and a little extra light from a torch, and you have a classic still-life in the making. Once you’ve meticulously arranged your subjects and background, you need to decide which parts of the scene are held in sharp focus, and which fall away into a soft, diffused blur. This is determined by two factors – the point on which you focus, and the depth-of-field in the shot.
