Chanel’s first retrospective exhibition Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto made its final stop in Shanghai. Tatler headed to the exhibition to explore how Chanel maintains its legacy and how it resonates across cultures

In spite of Shanghai’s dreary, rain-soaked summer, one unmissable exhibition is succeeding in luring people from their homes. Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto, devoted to the work of the legendary French designer, opened at Shanghai’s Power Station of Art in July. While tributes to the legendary figure abound, this show stands out as the first comprehensive Gabrielle Chanel retrospective, taking viewers on a unique journey through her six-decade career. After debuting at the Palais Galliera in Paris in 2020, the exhibition soon embarked on an international tour: the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne in 2021, Tokyo’s Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in 2022, then the Victoria & Albert Museum in London last September, where it ran until March before heading to Shanghai.
