“Western dresses may be regal and elaborate, but when I pair a string of pearls with a simple qipao, I look just as beautiful” Cultural pioneer Rebecca Pan is an actress and singer who was most celebrated in the 1950s and 1960s, but her prolific career in Hong Kong’s art and entertainment scene spans six decades. Born in Shanghai in 1930, she immigrated to Hong Kong in 1949 and started performing as a cabaret singer at nightclubs in 1957. It was a time when the influx of Europeans to colonial Hong Kong led to a burgeoning hotel nightclub scene. Pan’s multilingual skills—she could sing in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and occasionally French—made her a rare gem who could entertain both local and international audiences.
