Museums are the traditional custodians of world-class art and artefacts. But in Hong Kong, a treasure trove of priceless items has also been built by another institution: HSBC. The bank has been collecting and preserving items related to its own history, as well as the development of Hong Kong more broadly, since it was founded in the city in 1865. Its collection of thousands of historic items is now regularly drawn on by archivists and academics from Hong Kong and further afield, and items are regularly shared with the public through a variety of programmes run by the HSBC Archives Gallery in Tai Kok Tsui.
