Gallerist Elaine Kwok discovers outstanding objects and surprising stories in HSBC’s archives

Elaine Kwok, the managing partner, Asia, of gallery Hauser & Wirth, knows Hong Kong’s art scene inside out. And one of the city’s hidden gems, she thinks, is the HSBC Archives Gallery, where the bank showcases some of its huge collection of historic documents, photographs, drawings, paintings and banknotes. “I think it’s wonderful that HSBC has kept all this. It’s such a valuable part of Hong Kong’s history,” she says. Portraits in the collection reveal a who’s who of Hong Kong through the ages, while paintings and photographs of the city itself reveal how drastically Hong Kong’s skyline has changed over the years.
